The final pint was pulled at a well-known public house in Driffield last week.

The Full Measure, Mill Street, Driffield, shut up shop after serving the last customer on Sunday 31 March.

Amid expensive council tax bills and a gradual change in British pub culture, staff at the Measure eventually had to admit defeat.

The pub has been managed for over 15-years of by the Kitching family, and was a firm favourite among Driffield pub-goers.

James Kitching, who has owned the pub for the past seven years, said: “At the end of the day I am not willing to put any more of my personal finances into something that was lining the pockets of others and leaving nothing for me.

“The past seven years have been some of the best years of my life.

“I have met some fantastic personalities and made some life long friends. I have enjoyed nearly every second of it.

“I wish all the best to all the other local landlords and ladies, and I’m sure you will see me about.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all my loyal customers, all the staff that have graced the bar through the years, my friends who always turned up when I needed a extra set of hands and mostly ‘The Family’ for your unwavering support. It means a great deal.

“Like the song we finished with on Sunday at Lazerbeams, I will never forget.”

In the recent government budget announcement Chancellor George Osborne cancelled a planned 3 pence rise in beer duty tax and replaced it with a 1 pence cut in the duty for a pint of beer.

Despite this move, thought to be beneficial for pub landlords, Mr Kitching explained the changes to drinking culture and the smoking ban were also influential factors leading to the pub’s closure.
