East Riding Libraries has teamed up with the Reading Agency and the Rugby League World Cup 2013 to get as many adults reading as possible.

Over 80 adults from the East Riding Day Care Centres are taking part in the six-book challenge, where each participant will read six items – but it doesn’t have to be books, it could be a match day programme, magazine, or a Facebook app that involves reading.

For completing the challenge participants are offered the following:

* player autographs

* tickets for World Cup matches

* the chance to win a limited edition Hull-themed rugby ball

* the chance to take part in the opening parades for the World Cup matches.

Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get adults involved, not only in reading, but in the Rugby League World Cup, which is being played right on our doorstep.

“We’ve been working with both of Hull’s rugby teams, who have given us not only fantastic incentives, but will have our best local players reading stories in libraries.

“We have also been able to work with Hull City Council Events to create amazing opportunities for our day care centres to play a part in the World Cup matches and we know the England team will have massive support from the East Riding when they play their match at the KC Stadium.

“East Riding Libraries are thrilled to support this incredible event and get people reading as a result.”
