Superfast fibre broadband will be rolled out to more than 42,000 homes and businesses in the East Riding within the next three years as a result of a multi-million partnership between East Riding of Yorkshire Council and BT.
The project, ‘Broadband East Riding’, plans to extend high-speed fibre broadband to households and businesses across the county. The scheme is part of a government initiative called Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK).
As well as making high-speed fibre more widely available, the partnership will ensure everyone will be able to enjoy broadband speeds of more than two mbps, with more than 90 per cent of premises that get fibre broadband benefitting from speeds of 24mbps or more.
Broadband East Riding builds on the existing on-going commercial fibre deployment across the region and aims to provide a high-speed broadband network to an additional 42,734 premises in the area by December 2015.
The news has been welcomed by East Riding councillor Jane Evison who, along with fellow East Riding councillor Jonathan Owen, has long fought for faster broadband on behalf of East Riding residents.
Coun Evison said: “The news that an improved broadband service has been promised for so many households in the East Riding is excellent news and something residents and businesses will welcome.
“In this day and age it is essential that we are on a level playing field with the rest of the country.
“However, we need to remember that there are still communities that will continue to receive poor or no service at all and it is these people that we will support and assist in the search to find alternative solutions.”
